James Paterson
On 4th July our elder, Jim Paterson, lost the battle he had fought against innumerable health problems. For many years Jim would be in hospital and then in a few days be back home. He had an indefatigable spirit which kept him going when many others would have given up.
Jim became an elder in 1953 and was the third generation of his family to hold a position of authority within the congregation of Holytown. This place will now be taken by his son, David I Paterson, who, of course, bears the same name as his grandfather. Throughout his life Jim took an active part in church life and was for a time Lifeboy Leader. Up until his death Jim was on the reserve list of officers of the Motherwell Battalion of the Boys' Brigade. He maintained an interest in that organisation, here in Holytown and in the Battalion, to the end.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Anne, the family and his sister, Cathy.
David Shaw
On 27th August David Shaw passed away peacefully in Wishaw General Hospital. His family had been with him earlier when it was believed that he had made really good progress. However, not long after returning home the family had to return to the hospital where they found that the predictions made were not going to be fulfilled.
In 1969, while the Rev Thomas Swanston was minister, David became an elder. David served the church well as an elder although there were times when it was impossible for him to go round his district due to health problems. In spite of all his problems, he was always bright and cheerful, and willing to share a bit of fun with those around him. His courage was great.
May God bless Jean, his wife, Janey, David and Gordon and their families at this difficult time.
A word of thanks
James Paterson (Elder) - As many of the congregation will know Jim died in July after a long and courageous battle against illness. Anne, David, lain and Shaw (and their families) would like to thank everyone for their support over the years and for their cards, flowers and messages of sympathy over the last couple of months. We were touched by the very large attendance at the funeral and felt comforted that so many came along to pay their respects. Thank you to the office bearers of the congregation for ensuring all the arrangements went so well.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the Very Rev Dr Hugh R Wyllie and the Rev Norman McKee for their conduct of the service, and to Derek McGlone who acted as organist on the day.
