For the tots
Our clocks changed at the weekend and so although it is lighter in the morning for a short while it is very much darker at night. You will have to stay indoors in the evenings instead of going out to play but it is not all bad news. You will have games and toys with which you can play and books that you can look at.
The plants in the garden and the trees go to sleep for the winter and then wake up when spring comes and grow new leaves and so on. God gives us all the variety by having four different seasons. See if you can spot when the last leaf falls off a tree near where you stay and in the spring see which tree is the first to have a brand new leaf.
For the teens
Did you know that the original Christian community in Iraq were the Assyrians? They are conscious of their identity as the indigenous people of the country, descended from the ancient Assyrians. The capital of the Assyrian Empire, Nineveh (near Mosul in modern Iraq), and the story of Jonah sent to call it to repentance are part of their unique heritage. Tradition says that it was the apostles Peter and Thomas who first brought the Gospel to the Assyrians. Similar to the Assyrians, though having their own different church, are the members of the Syriac community. Some believe they are descended from the Arameans of Biblical times.
There is also a small Armenian Christian community, as well as Protestants who are converts in the last few generations from a variety of backgrounds.
In modem times, the term Assyrian is often used to mean the Christian community of Iraq. These Christians form a distinct community with their own language and cultural traditions. Their language and their Christian faith are the two main elements of Assyrian identity. The various Assyrian churches were great missionary churches and carried Christianity into Central Asia as far as India, China, Tibet, Mongolia and even Japan.
The Girls' Brigade
On Saturday 20th October, 2 girls from the Junior Section took part in the National Somerville Award competition at Blair Drummond Safari Park. The girls were asked to design a collage poster depicting animals that are useful to us. Although we were not placed in this competition, the girls did very well and had a great day. Well done to: Nicole Harrison and Nicole Thomson.
We are also delighted to announce that on Saturday 27th October 4 girls from the Junior Section took part in the National Junior Competition, held in Perth, 1st Holytown were runners-up.
A total of 42 teams took part and each team were given one hour to produce a dramatised version of either Noah's Ark or the story of Creation using various musical instruments. Our girls chose Noah's Ark and hopefully this production will be performed as part of our Awards Night in May 2008.
Congratulations to Nicole Harrison, Julia McKendrick, Antonia Molloy and Lauren Nicol.
