Preparation meeting
Each month you will hear the minister intimating a preparation meeting. It is normally held on or around the second Sunday evening of the month at 6.30 pm in the Church Hall. The purpose of this meeting is to decide upon the format and content of the evening service that is held on the last Sunday of the month. It is a quite informal arrangement (you don't need to wear your `Sunday best') and usually starts with a cup of tea or coffee. Anyone present can come up with an idea for the general theme for the service. Once the group is happy with the theme, we all try to come up with suggestions for hymns and readings that relate to the chosen theme.
At the last meeting, it was decided that the theme would be 'persons in the Bible that have been raised from the dead'. It was, suggested that the first reading would be the passage from Scripture that made reference to the appearances that Jesus made in his resurrected body which also stated that he appeared to more than five hundred people. Well, everyone present was familiar with this passage but try as we might we had great difficulty finding it. All the other readings and hymns had been picked before one of the folks came across the passage we were looking for. Some of us thought it was in Acts but, just when we were at the point of giving up for the evening, we eventually found it in First Corinthians Chapter 15, verses 3-8.
I have to tell you that a few nights after this, I was reading from Psalms at bedtime and must have fallen asleep. I woke at 5:00 am, the bedside light was still in and my Bible was lying face down on the floor next to my bed. Despite the early hour, I was curious to see that when I picked my Bible up and turned it round it was open at .... First Corinthians, Chapter 15. So to conclude, I would once more extend an invitation to you all to come along to the preparation meetings, but more importantly, come along to worship at our monthly evening celebration.
Ruth
Can I take this opportunity to thank all of you who passed on your best wishes to my daughter on the occasion of her marriage on 10th April to Steven Marsella with a special thanks to Caryl for leading the service at New Lanark. As I write this, the honeymoon has been put on hold due to the cloud of Icelandic volcano ash preventing flights leaving the country. She assured me that although this setback is being regarded as an 'act of God', she will be joining me in the usual place on her return.
