For the tots
Have you ever lost something which is very precious to you - perhaps a favourite ball, a doll, a toy motor and so on. The list is endless.
A lady in the Bible lost a silver coin. It was part of the head dress that she wore. She was very upset about losing it and began to search and search and search in her house. The floor in the house was only earth, not carpet or linoleum. She picked up her brush and carefully went into all the corners of the room and eventually she found the missing coin.
She was absolutely delighted and thrilled. She was so happy she wanted to share her happiness with her neighbours. She invited them all to celebrate with her.
God is like that about us. If we forget to say thank you to God he is upset like the lady who lost the coin but he wants to celebrate when we remember to say a big thank you for all his goodness to us. Will you remember?
For the teens
Jesus once told a parable about three servants to whom the master had given talents. One received five, the second received three and the third one received one. The master went off for a long time and when he came back he asked the three servants to tell him what they had done with the talents they had received. The first one had doubled his five to ten, the second had doubled his from three to six but the one who had only received one still only had one because he had buried the talent in the ground. The third servant had to give his talent to the first one and ended up with absolutely nothing.
That might seem very harsh to you and me but it was clear that the third servant didn't do anything at all apart from burying what he had received and could show no profit whatsoever. We can at times be like the third servant. We all receive talents - I don't mean money but gifts. There is always something which we can well but if we don't use that gift we are liable to lose it.
In your teens you are working towards certificate exams and can be tempted not to work as hard as you might. If you do that you you are like the third servant. If you use our gifts and try as hard as you can you will be like either the first or second servant and it will give you real pleasure to achieve something.
Apart from school there are gifts which we can use in the church or in the community. There is always a need for helpers to carry out little jobs. Don't be like the third servant who lost his talent.
