Friends,
As you will know we have been without a constant power supply for some two weeks now in the manse and so life has been just a little bit unpredictable for both of us.
For example, we wake up in the morning wondering if there will be power to allow us to have a shower or a cup of tea and so on waking, no matter what the time, if there is power - we shower and stick on the kettle just in case!
We arrive home during the day or at night to a cold house to discover that yet again the power supply has been interrupted and not only are we cold but we are unable to cook the meal we had planned!
We sit in the semi-darkness cold and uncomfortable because the power has been restored but is reduced so much that the lights glow dim. In fact they are so low that we can hardly see each other across the room and what power we have is certainly not strong enough to power the heating or any appliances - I would never have believed that it could take a small amount of water in a kettle almost thirty minutes to boil!!!
We soon realised that in such circumstances our whole life changes - you kind of live on tenterhooks, you are afraid to do certain things just in case the power goes off, you cannot stock up the fridge or freezer, or wash clothes when you want to, or for me, work at my computer as I need - you begin to take advantage of the power when you have it - life just becomes so much more difficult and unpredictable!
But then how spoilt we are - for we are indeed fortunate people to have such power in the first place as the norm!
Thinking on all of this made me realise how important power is in our lives - but I am not thinking of electrical power - but rather the power we are supplied by the Holy Spirit. Without that power in our lives or when that power is interrupted in our lives or if it is running at a reduced level, we just cannot function properly either.
Our lives become so very unpredictable; we live for the moment; we can find it difficult to plan for the future; we can lose our sense of joy; we can feel cold inside and become cold towards others; we can run on empty - feeling far from God and we can be left feeling very low, without the strength to go on. Without our power supply we are just unable to function at the one hundred percent level.
So it strikes me that we always need to take time to restore our power supply - we cannot run on empty for long. We need to make time for and spend time with God and let him boost his power within us, restore us to full power, re-energise us and rill us with the warmth of his love. It's not electrical power that's; truly important - nice but not important - the power of the Holy Spirit is what enhances our lives and energises us for living.
Blessings
Caryl
