Oran Mor
I attended an event early in May at Oran Mor. This building was formerly Kelvinside Parish Church and was built in 1862.
It is a truly beautiful Church building which was allowed to become derelict. It was refurbished in 2003 and is now a busy venue hosting entertainment, weddings and corporate events.
Above each pillar and between the arches is a carved portrait-head of someone famed for his part in the Protestant Reformation. Eleven heads range from 14th century Wyclif, through founders of German, Swiss and Scottish churches including Knox and Calvin, ending in 19th century Scottish Chalmers.
Various speakers including an MSP and a Chief Executive of a large public association delivered their speeches over the course of the afternoon. When the MSP was asked why he could not ensure a specific improvement initiative could immediately be introduced, his answer was ' you've got to let the water seep through the charcoal'. He followed this with a collection of similar sayings. As my mind began to wander, I could almost imagine all these carved heads nodding together in disapproval. This building that had been lovingly designed for the glorification of God now hosted events such as the one I attended, plays and pop and folk concerts rather than hosting worship, the purpose for which it was intended. How disappointing!
Website
The website for the Church has a little piece on the main page called "weekly wisdom'. As it suggests, a new piece of wisdom is offered each week. As I write this, two pieces are provided which I would like to share with those among you for whom the internet and computers are a wee bit of a mystery and they are:
Love is the visible attribute of an invisible God.
What advertising agencies do for their clients, we're called to do for Christ.
We were contacted through the website by a lady from New Zealand by the name of Liz Hendl who was trying to trace the history of her ancestors who are buried in the old part of the cemetery. She first contacted us back in February but was back in touch a week or so ago saying she was coming to the UK on holiday and planned on joining with us in worship on a Sunday in June. I would invite each and every one of you to make her and every other visitor that comes to our Church feel loved and welcome when they join with us in worship.
Just a Thought!
The reason some people don't recognise opportunity is that it usually comes disguised as hard work. (Anon)
To be a responsible person is to find one's own role and then, funded by the grace of God, to fill this role and to delight in it. (Cornelius Plantinga)
