Together we make a difference
This is the name of our giving programme, which will culminate in two Congregational Gatherings in February.
None of us really likes to talk about money - what we give, how we give, how much we should give. This is something we like to keep private - between us and God.
The Bible has a very public attitude to money and possessions. Many verses are devoted to this subject. The Old Testament speaks about the tithe which should be offered to God. In the gospels Jesus has a great deal to say about selfishness and sharing - condemning those who keep all their possessions to themselves and praising those who are willing to share in a generous way. Later in the New Testament Paul encouraged the first Christians to give generously so that the better off congregations in places like Corinth could support the poor congregation in Jerusalem.
In the weeks leading up to our Congregational Gatherings, we should all be thinking about our attitude to money and possessions, and about our giving to God for the work of his Church.
How generous is God's giving to us? How generous is our giving as a response to God's giving? How generous is our giving as a desire to share the good news of God's love through the work of the Church?
Holytown Primary School R13 visit church
On Wednesday 10 December we in Room 13 were visiting the church in order to give us greater knowledge about our topic Christianity and The Christian church in Scotland. Our teacher, Mrs Lennox has been talking about this subject in class. Also we had the advantage of inviting Mrs Alice Smith into our class to take part in a question and answer session about her work as an elder in Holytown Parish Church.
During our visit to the church, we saw lots of fascinating things such as: the Bible that was undamaged in the 2006 Hall fire, we all wondered if it was a miracle or just luck! We also learned about the Advent Wreath and what the 5 candles represent. Reverend Kyle taught us about Communion and why we have it. She was also kind enough to set up puzzles and games to reinforce our knowledge about the Church Building and we all know now the names of the objects and places of interest inside the church. No one knew where the "chancel" was before our visit, but we do now!
