For the tots
One of your favourite hymns is very probably "Jesus loves me!" Did you know that the words were written to be included in a very sad book about a little boy who was very, very ill? The lady and her sister lived near a US Military Academy at West Point. They had a Sunday School for the young cadets. This hymn has survived for a long time as it is now nearly one hundred and fifty years since it appeared.
Missionaries have taken this hymn into all sorts of comers of the world. So next time you sing' Jesus loves me!' just think about the thousands and thousands of little boys and girls like you who have sung it over the years.
For the teens
Recently I received a magazine which is called "Crown and Anchor". It came from a shipping company with whom I have, in the past, travelled. Within its pages are photos of places such as Vietnam, Hong Kong, Australia and the Caribbean as well as giving information about new ships.
Interesting as all the information is, the title "Crown and Anchor" has a fascinating ring to it. In the church we sing the hymn "Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne, hark how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own." This crown belongs, of course, to Jesus who in other verses is described as the Lord of Life, the Lord of peace and the Lord of love.
We are all familiar with the hymn, "Will your anchor hold in the storms of life". The chorus is very definite that we have an anchor which will hold us steadfast and sure when we are grounded firm and deep in the Saviour's love. The anchor is very important for a ship especially when the seas are rough and it is important for us to have Jesus as our anchor.
There is much to remember from the title of the magazine whether we are at sea or on dry land.
