For the tots
A family were out walking in the country, when they came across a small anthill. It had been partly destroyed by a farm vehicle or a wild animal. As they looked closer they could see that the anthill was in total disarray. Some of the ants were wounded and others confused. They had nowhere to go. There was total panic.
The younger son looked down at the poor ants. He wanted to help them. But his hands, even though they were small, were too large to assist the ants. He looked up to his parents and sighed, "if only I was their size I could help them. I could do something."
Mum and dad answered, "That's exactly what God did for us in sending Jesus. He came down from heaven to earth. He became our size. "Child in the Manger, infant of Mary". That is why Christmas is so wonderful.
For the teens
This is a time of year that we all love. Many things are happening at home and in the shops and on the streets. Everything seems to be shining or glittering. However, that was not what it was like on the very first Christmas -far from it.
Nowadays when a new baby arrives everything has been prepared ready to welcome the new child. But contrast that with what happened when Jesus was born. His mother has made the journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem on top of a donkey - a far from comfortable way to travel. The arrival of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem was not heralded by a fanfare of trumpets. Instead this little child, important to all of us, is born in a stable because nowhere else was available to them.
I believe that this reminds us that we do not need to look for fancy things. We can appreciate that the gift of this very special infant happened in the least likely surroundings but yet this little child is and always will be the most important event that ever took place. By all means enjoy all the fun at Christmas but do remember who was born and why he was born into this world. Think of the true and lasting message of Christmas.
